More winter plants

The spring storm of March 19 left us with 12 + inches of fresh white snow. The crocheted and silk plants on the table were a delight to look at this morning.

Rag Runner and Placemats

The runner and mats were woven from strips of clothing from a friend. She did not want to throw away some clothes she had kept from the 60's. Cut into long strips the fabric colors blended nicely into a black yarn warp.
The project was done on a rigid heddle loom, plain weave.

Plants in Winter

Reba pointed me to an Etsy site where there were patterns for crocheted plants. The ones that caught my eye were cactus, African violets and bamboo. Here is my first attempt at the Lucky Bamboo. I bought the patterns from the Esty site,
called PlanetJune. Take a look around.

The patterns are all very well written and the designs replicate actual plants. She even provides the scientific names. I started with a small potted cactus, Gasteria,  "Ox Tongue Plant", the little one on the table. I hope to have a collection of "pots" on my table. I also thought that they would be fun to take in the camper, put on the picnic table, and no worry about their survival.

Wintertime Project begins

As the winter progresses, so does the Garden Afghan or some such name. The colors of the Woolease
chunky yarn were selected for previous projects, rug, placemats, mug rugs, and others, but they are working nicely together so far. The colors also happen to coincide with duvet colors on the bed where the afghan will come to rest. Twenty blocks like the 4 seen in the picture will complete the piece. Hopefully spring will come as I wrap this up and get back to weaving. 

Valentine Love Birds

Woven Pillow

This pillow cover was woven on the Kromski, rigid heddle loom. The back side is solid black. The pillow was an old, faded one that now has been reborn. The yarn was a mark down at Webb's store in Northampton, MA and is a bulky, fun yarn with occassional bows of matching roving. Yarns like these are fun to use, the final look is very whimsical I think.

Huggable Horsey

When I heard that a 2 year old in the family loves Nay Nays.., I knew I had to make this horsey. The pattern came from the book Huggable Crochet by Christine Lucas. You can see the other wonderful patterns at her website,  Scare Crow Originals. She sells on Etsy, too. The saddle, halter and reins were added separately. It was one of the hardest pieces I have done, mostly due to assembling all the components to make it actually look like a horse. I think it will work for the 2 year old, and she will probably try to ride it as well. Merry Christmas, little Lyddy.

Seasons Greetings from Dobby Road

Here is the motley crew of four house elves that have been created by 3 women in our crafts group, Kyla, Carolyn and Kristy. We were amazed and delighted to see how the faces all came out differently when we left the pattern behind and went into "freeform". Our other craft group member, Anne, became the group photographer which we now realize is a perfect role for her. She knows her way around the digital camera for sure. No doubt we will capture these creatures of delight in various poses and situations as time goes by. After all... THEY ARE FREE!  They have made one friend already in Carolyn's house, or maybe they stole Deets the cat's favorite napping spot.

Punchneedle Ornaments

Thinking about Christmas theses days and since I was working on a punchneedle project, I decided to design and make some punchneedle ornaments.  Here's a few that I've worked on so far.  Now I need some backing fabric and ribbon for a tie.  Most of all, I enjoy coming up with the designs.  The actual punching takes a while, so my plan of having a lot by a December 1st Craft Fair is probably not going to happen, but at least I'll have a few to add to the other things on my table!
